The mythology of Grishneshwara temple, according to the Shivpurana, is that a Brahmin named Brahmvetta Sudharm lived on the mountain Devagiri with his wife Sudha. They didn’t have a child together. Sudha arranged for her husband to marry Ghushma, her sister. Brahmvetta and Ghushma have a child. Sudha was envious of the boy as a result of this. She murdered their son and dismembered his body before throwing it into a lake where Gushma liked to worship Lord Shiva. Ghushma learned of it, yet she continued to worship Shiva on the lake’s shores and repeat the mantra ‘Om Namah Shivaya every day. This delighted the Lord, and he appeared before her one day as she was worshipping with her son.
He informed Ghushma that her sister was the one who had murdered her son. Ghushma then prayed to the Lord for forgiveness for her sister’s sin. This pleased the lord even more, and he requested a favour from Ghusma. She asked him to stay there indefinitely. As a result, the lord changed himself into a Jyotirlinga near the lake, and Shivalya became the name of the lake.
